OJ S current issue. Release calendar. For example, she would open the door, step out, step back in, shut the door and then repeat the process, staying out the second time.

When she returned and repeated the process in reverse, she would finally end up back in and everything would be evenly done twice. How exhausting that must have been for her!

That's probably an extreme example, but what about our routines; could any of them be internal rules?

The article in the paper gave examples of political "insanities. Time after time, we continue to do the same thing and expect different results.

What are some internal rules you live by? I know it's easier to put on my eye makeup with my hair pulled back, but I don't do that. I could, easily, but every morning I don't.

I do it in the order that has become programmed into my brain. What about saying yes? You tell yourself you are NOT going to sign up to decorate the church for the Mother's Day Tea; the phone rings and it's the head of committees asking if you would be willing to help decorate the church for the Mother's Day Tea.

You say--yes, of course! You get crazier and crazier trying to meet all the demands and you just keep saying yes, because it's programmed into your brain that if you say no you are being selfish, and God forbid that you would be THAT!

Better to be dead than have the audacity to take care of yourself, which, after all, is what saying no is all about.

I had a saying cut out of a magazine that was pinned by a magnet to my fridge for years. Every time I opened the refrigerator door, I saw it.

I think so. Is it easy? I think not. In fact, it might be very, very difficult. Is it worth the pain? That's a personal decision each of us has to make.

Usually until something hurts beyond bearing, we will stay in our comfort zone. What do you think? Wednesday, May 18, A little about change.

Last time, I talked about fear of change and making decisions. Since that post, I have been mulling around the subject of change itself, on which I have not surprisingly a couple of thoughts.

Many people accept a philosophy that any change is good. I'm not sure I agree with that. I don't agree with that, either. What I do agree with is that change is inevitable, so we would be well served to come to terms with it.

Looking first at the "any change is good" theory, changing just for the sake of change can maintain a level of uncertainty or instability in one's life, perhaps even contribute to a sense of escapism and shrugging off of personal responsibility.

For example, rather than facing mistakes or unpleasant situations, you can change significant relationships, jobs, neighborhoods, churches.

Those changes may very likely be detrimental to you, but easier than taking responsibility. My mother had what she referred to as "wanderlust.

Consequently, we were constantly having to give up "stuff" that was too hard or too "inconsequential" to move; we gave up pets and we gave up relationships, schools, churches, etc.

As adults, my siblings and I all experienced difficulty in "staying put" and in forming sustained relationships. Conversely, if you resist change at all costs, when it comes you will be unprepared and quite possibly floored by it.

A good example of this is a person who is unwilling to step into the world of technology. The other day I met with a woman who had a small home business--had being the operative word.

She didn't have a computer! She doesn't "believe in them" but thinks business should be conducted in the old-fashioned way--that's the way it always worked before.

How did this woman expect to compete? She was devastated when her business failed. And now she has to find a job.

I can think of very few jobs requiring skills above manual labor that don't require some computer knowledge. I feel bad for her, but wouldn't it have been a better strategy for her to have accepted the inevitable and moved into the change?

All these great new things require an adjustment, just like the less-noticeably "positive" changes. A big part of all change is loss.

It's easy to recognize this in changes that we think of as "negative" or difficult, such as the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a family home, etc.

But there is also loss of the status quo in happier changes. For instance, when you get a big promotion, there can be the loss of the workplace community you have known for years as you move on to work with new people.

Or you finally are able to buy your dream home, but that means moving to a new neighborhood, which means leaving the old neighborhood and friends.

So how can we cope? What's our best strategy to deal with change? I believe just knowing that change is a part of life takes a lot of the surprise and scariness out of it.

Also, realizing from the beginning that you will learn something from it colors it as a challenge or best case, an experience. We simply don't have control over some things.

What we do have control over is our attitude, our way of being with the changes. If we say, "I can't stand this. This can't happen.

I won't tolerate this," we put up a barrier to acceptance. And acceptance is what we must get to in order to move on in a healthy and whole way.

Better to say, "I don't like this, but here it is and how can I make it work. I think that's asking too much sometimes. I think it's enough to acknowledge that the change is happening, work with it, and accept the new reality that comes from it.

Friday, May 6, More about fear. Fear is a huge topic with many different facets. Last time I talked about fear of change and how that means taking calculated risks and making decisions.

It occurred to me overnight that I should talk a little more about decisions. If you're paying attention, doing your research, getting advice from knowledgeable and trusted sources, you may rest assured the decision you make will be a good one, right?

Not exactly. You make a decision based on a certain set of circumstances, and the decision is your best guess at the time.

But circumstances change, sometimes slowly, but sometimes immediately. And there you are with a decision that doesn't work.

The quotes are around "automatic" because you still have to notify everyone, fill out the forms, etc. Anyway, as I mentioned yesterday, I was fresh out of decision-making power during my divorce.

Contract notice — utilities. Not hard to see why we might have self-esteem issues. Now on to the self-deprecation. Do we undermine our talents, skills and accomplishments because we were taught by our mothers again?

Is it human nature? Do we think we're being humble? Recently, I heard someone say, "I can cook; my family says I'm a really good cook.

But that's nothing--anybody can cook. And it's a shame. So, okay; that's how we've looked at ourselves and lived our lives up until now.

Does it make us happy? I don't think so; I think it brings us down and thwarts our full potential. So let's change it. Let's refute our mothers' or whomever is to blame messages.

We can stand up straight, get the hairdo we've always wanted, get big glasses, small glasses--chartreuse glasses, if we want--a nose job, boob job, new clothes or whatever.

Or, we can just be ourselves--our best selves--according to who we think that should be. It's really nobody else's business. Is it? And let's acknowledge our specialness.

You're a good cook? Say that proudly when it comes up. You paint? Be proud of it. Display it proudly in your home, and when someone remarks on it, say, "Thanks, I painted that.

Instead of looking for, and always finding, your shortcomings, go on an internal hunt for your "longcomings," your attributes. Everybody has lots of them.

Guests invariably comment on how comfortable and luxurious it is. I used to respond with something like, "Well, I wish I could afford really great sheets.

I love a well made bed. What's right with you? Make a list. Write it down where you can refer to it when you start playing the old, I'm-not-good-enough tapes.

You are! Why not write a story about one of your strong points or accomplishments in the comments section of this blog to share with our cyberfriends.

It would be so interesting to hear about each of you and what you're good at. Good night for now. Saturday, June 11, Girlfriends.

This will be brief because it's late as I write. I just got home from a night out listening to music at an outdoor venue.

The music was too loud and far from my favorite genre , the crowd too thick, the evening too hot. I hadn't had anything to eat since breakfast and I'd had a little wine and a bad hangover-guaranteed margarita, which of course went straight to my head.

So I felt grouchy. But the evening was great! Because I was with other women. I hardly knew one of them and had never met the other before this evening, but by the end of the evening we all knew each other better.

And on the way home, we were making plans for another outing. And when I got home, there was a message on my voicemail inviting me for a bike ride in the morning from another girlfriend.

What would we do without our girlfriends? Think about yours, and think about how it would be to go through life without them.

I am ever so grateful for the women in my life, and I am truly blessed to have so many, and such a variety, of girlfriends.

Here's to you! You rock!!! Monday, May 30, Sphexishness. Well, there's a word I had never heard till I read a recent article in the paper about this characteristic of the female sphex wasp and how as humans, we sometimes display the same characteristic.

When the eggs hatch, the wasp grubs feed on the paralyzed cricket. The thing is, though, that before she will take the paralyzed cricket into the burrow, she first goes in to check that all is well.

When she comes out, if the cricket has been moved, she will drag it back to the entrance, leave it there and go back in to re-scout the burrow.

When she comes out, if the cricket has again been moved, she will again drag it back to the entrance, go in and re-scout the burrow.

When she comes out, if the cricket has again been moved, she will. Scientists meanly, I think! I guess the only reason the experimenters stopped at 40 times was that they got bored.

This wasp has been programmed to act and respond in this particular and definite way. She doesn't know any other way.

What about us as humans? Do we have an internal rule that drives us to do the same thing in the same way time after time? Long ago, I learned that one definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Think about it. Doesn't that bear an eerie resemblance to the wasp's habit? For example, she would open the door, step out, step back in, shut the door and then repeat the process, staying out the second time.

When she returned and repeated the process in reverse, she would finally end up back in and everything would be evenly done twice. How exhausting that must have been for her!
